Description

Ecclesall, Yorkshire born wing half Walter Buckley played for Sheffield Schools being capped by England Schoolboys in 1920, and started his football career with Birley Carr in 1922 joining Arsenal as an amateur in April 1923 although he didn’t make the first team at Highbury. After a trial with Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in August 1926 he joined Mansfield Town the following month, scoring once in 32 appearances for The Stags before moving to Second Division Bradford Park Avenue in May 1927 and made his Football League debut against Reading in March 1929, making 5 appearances at the end of their 1928-29 Third Division (North) Championship winning season before joining Lincoln City in May 1930.

After being Third Division (North) runners up in his first season they were Champions in 1931-32 and Buckley spent a further season in the Second Division with Lincoln before joining Rochdale in July 1933 after a single goal in 89 appearances for The Imps. He played three seasons for the Spotland club, scoring twice in 115 appearances for ‘Dale before joining non league Runcorn in 1936.
