Caldercruix, Lanarkshire born goalkeeper George Johnstone played for junior club Benburb, from where he was signed by Aberdeen in 1936 along with Frank Dunlop. Described as “tall and well built with a good pair of hands”, he played in Aberdeen’s 1937 Scottish Cup Final defeat to Celtic and was still in goal the other side of the Second World War when he played in the 1946 Scottish League Cup victory.
He also played as Aberdeen finally won the Scottish Cup in the 1947 Final, beating Hibernian 2-1. After 196 appearances he joined Dunfermline in 1949, but made only 5 appearances before moving to Raith Rovers later the same year. He made 110 appearances for Raith over the next six years, before joining Greenock Morton, where he made 7 appearances. In 1956 he joined non league Thornton Hibs, and had a further spell in League football with Cowdenbeath between 1959 and 1960, when already over 45 years old.
