Dipton, County Durham born left half Teddy Buck played for North Eastern League club West Stanley in 1926 before joining First Division Leeds United in May 1927, for whom he made his Football League debut at Liverpool in September 1928. After 8 appearances for Leeds, where he was mainly a reserve and understudy to Willis Edwards and later George Reed, he joined First Division Grimsby Town for £2,000 in December 1929.

Although Grimsby were relegated in 1931-32, he won a Second Division Championship medal in 1933-34 when he was an ever present. He played regularly through to the suspension of peacetime football due to the Second World War, and was ever present for three consecutive seasons between 1933-34 and 1935-36, and again in 1937-38. During the Second World War he made some 203 wartime appearances for Grimsby Town in addition to having scored 6 goals in 389 appearances for them prior to the War. He retired from playing and joined the Grimsby Town coaching staff in 1945.
