Aston, Birmingham born left half Ernest Cresser began his football career with Park Mills in 1898 and spent 1902-03 on the books at Small Heath (now Birmingham City) without making their first eleven. He joined Walsall in the summer of 1903, playing in the Birmingham & District League, before being signed by Second Division Stockport County in the 1905 close season, for whom he made his Football League debut against Chelsea that September.

He made 14 appearances for The Hatters over two seasons before transferring to Southern League club Leyton in 1907, playing in East London for three years before a move back to the Midlands to join Birmingham & District League club Worcester City in 1910. He then joined Northamptonshire League club Peterborough City the next year and before 1911 was over, he moved to Barrow, playing in the Lancashire Combination, where he subsequently finished his career.
