Description

Wombwell, Yorkshire born left half Jack Sykes began his football career with hometown Midland League club Wombwell from where he was signed by First Division club Birmingham in 1932, making his Football League debut against Huddersfield Town in May 1934 in the last game of the 1933-34 season. Sykes wasn’t selected again until January 1936, but he then made 15 appearances for Birmingham before the end of the season and played another 18 matches during the first half of their 1936-37 campaign before losing his place in January 1937 after four consecutive defeats.

Sykes joined Third Division (South) club Millwall in the 1937 close season and started 1937-38 in their first eleven, however he lost his place in early September and only made 7 appearances in total as Millwall won the Third Division (South) Championship. He remained on the fringes at The Den as they consolidated their position in the mid table of the Second Division, making two further appearances for The Lions, the final one coming in a home defeat to West Ham United in March 1939. His career was then effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War that September.
