Dalston, London born goalkeeper Billy Bower began his football career playing for The Peel Institute in 1904 and signed for Second Division Clapton Orient in 1905, making his Football League debut against Burton United in March 1906, and was a regular until the end of the 1906-07 season. Between 1907 and 1910 he was Orient’s understudy goalkeeper to Walter Whittaker, but he took over the gloves again at the start of 1910-11, a season where he missed only one match.
He lost his place at the start of the 1913-14 season but regained it in January and played most of the fixtures in the season’s run in, however he was again out of the team from the start of the next season and played his final game for Orient that October in a 1-0 defeat to Derby County. He made 176 appearances over ten seasons at Millfields Road before football was suspended due to the First World War.
After the War finished he signed for Southern League Gillingham, playing a season at Priestfield and making 5 first team appearances before his retirement in 1921, when he became Dartford’s trainer and briefly their manager c.1937, subsequently their groundsman before retiring in 1947.
