Newington, Edinburgh born right back Walter Borthwick began his football career with Broxburn Shamrock in 1914 and joined Scottish League East Fife in 1915. He then played for Cowdenbeath later the same year before joining Hibernian in the 1916 close season, making 54 appearances for Hibs during the following two seasons. A move to Partick Thistle followed in the summer of 1918 and it was for Partick that he reached the height of his career when he played left half in the 1921 Scottish Cup Final as The Jags beat Glasgow Rangers 1-0 in the Final at Celtic Park to win the Scottish Cup for the only time in the club’s history to date.
After three years at Firhill he joined Second Division Bristol City later in 1921, making his Football League debut in a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in February 1922, making a single appearance for The Robins’ first team. He returned to Cowdenbeath in the spring of 1922 before joining Hartlepools United, for whom he made two appearances at the start of the 1922-23 season. He finished his career with Nithsdale Wanderers whom he joined in 1923.
