Description

Boosbeck, Yorkshire born inside or outside right Charles Best began his football career with Eston United in 1908, playing for Eston United in the 1909 FA Amateur Cup Final which was lost to Clapton at Ilford, from where he joined First Division Middlesbrough as an amateur, making his Football League debut against Bury in March 1911, making 4 further appearances before the season’s end, scoring in a defeat at Sheffield United. He turned professional when he joined Hull City over the 1911 close season. Hull were then fined £25 over his signature as they’d failed to approach Middlesbrough to seek their permission. A regular for Hull City in 1911-12, he was forced to retire after suffering an injury in November 1912 and having scored 5 goals in 37 appearances he became assistant trainer at Hull City until the onset of the First World War.
