Wrexham born wing half Edwin “Teddy” Hughes started his football career with Wrexham St Giles in 1901 and Wrexham Victoria in 1902, from where he joined Combination League Wrexham in 1903. While there won his first Wales cap of 16 in total (both sides of World War One) in March 1906 against Scotland. He joined First Division Nottingham Forest, home to several Welsh players, in March 1906 making his Football League debut at Sunderland in April 1906 and scoring 6 goals in 175 games for Forest over the next 5 seasons, playing 36 times as Forest won the Second Division Championship in 1907. He re-joined Wrexham in 1911 but Manchester City then signed him in January 1913, and he scored 3 times in 88 appearances both sides of World War One for City, although having lost 4 seasons to the War he was already 33 at its end and made only 6 of those in 1919-20 as younger players emerged. He joined Southern League Aberdare Athletic in June 1920, managed by former Manchester City and Welsh International colleague Lot Jones, and when they joined the new Third Division (South) he played in their inaugural Football League fixture against Portsmouth in August 1921 and making 32 appearances, scoring once, over the next 2 seasons, before joining non league Colwyn Bay in 1923.
