Description

Polmont, Stirlingshire born right back Bob Bennie began his senior football career with Airdrieonians in 1894 and joined Heart of Midlothian in 1895, from where he transferred to St Mirren in May 1896. After 84 appearances for The Buddies he was sold to Newcastle United in May 1901 in a joint deal with Robert Orr, making his Football League debut at Blackburn Rovers that September. After playing 31 matches in his debut season as Newcastle finished third in the League Championship, injuries limited him to only 6 more appearances over the next two seasons before he was forced to retire in 1904, and he later served as a director of Newcastle United between 1930 and 1945.

He was the uncle of the 1920’s Scottish International footballer Bob Bennie, who played for Third Lanark, Airdrieonians (with whom he won the Scottish Cup in 1924) and Heart of Midlothian.
