Houghton-le-Spring born full back Bill Barron played in North East football for Hetton Juniors, Bishop’s Auckland and Annfield Plain before joining Hartlepools United in September 1936 without making their first eleven, having a similar spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers later in 1936. He joined First Division Charlton Athletic in October 1937 and made his Football League debut against Brentford in February 1938 scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory. However he only featured 3 times for Charlton, scoring again against Stoke City, before joining Northampton Town in May 1938, for whom he played both sides of the Second World War, scoring 4 goals in 192 appearances before joining non league Kettering Town in 1951.
