Description

Hepthorne Lane, near Clay Cross, Derbyshire born left winger Reg Gore began his football career with Hepthorne Lane Primitives in 1931 and spent 1932-33 on the books of Chesterfield without making a first team appearance for The Spireites. He endured a similar experience on the books of First Division Birmingham in 1933-34 before joining Third Division (North) Southport in the summer of 1934, making his Football League debut against Darlington that September, scoring twice in 2o appearances for The Sandgrounders during a single season at Haig Avenue.

He went into non league football with South Liverpool in 1935, Rhyl in 1936 and Midland League club Frickley Colliery in 1937 before returning to Football League action with Second Division West Ham United later the same year, scoring on his debut against Bradford at Park Avenue in April 1939. He played another four times for West Ham before the season end without scoring but his career was severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. During the War he played football in Scotland for St Mirren from 1941, and after the War he scored once in 2 appearances for The Buddies during 1946-47 before joining Cowdenbeath in May 1947, playing a single season for Cowden before his retirement in 1948.

NB this photograph was taken on 14th April 1939, the day before Dick Bell’s sole appearance for West Ham United.
