Description

West Ham, London born right back George Barber began his football career with Redhill before joining Luton Town, where he was on their books in 1929-30 without making their first eleven. He joined Chelsea in 1930, making his Football League debut at Aston Villa on Boxing Day that year. He was a regular in Chelsea’s team through to the outbreak of the Second World War, playing exclusively in the First Division, missing only 3 matches in 1934-35 and one in 1936-37, and he was part of their 1932 FA Cup semi final team that lost 2-1 to eventual winners Newcastle United at Leeds Road, Huddersfield. By the time outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 cut short his career he had scored once, in an infamous FA Cup defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in January 1933, in 297 appearances. He continued to play wartime football for Chelsea before retiring in September 1941.

NB behind Barber is Chelsea and England goalkeeper Vic Woodley, taken at Highbury before a defeat to Arsenal on December 19th 1936.
