Willington, Northumberland born right back Elias Ashurst played in north east league football for Stanley United in 1920 and Shildon Athletic in 1921 before joining First Division Birmingham, for whom he made his Football League debut at Middlesbrough in March 1922, making a further 8 appearances before the end of the season. He didn’t get another opportunity in the first team until January 1923, whereafter he was Birmingham’s regular right back until the end of the season, retaining his position in the team through much of 1923-24, when he made 32 appearances, scoring his only career goal in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in March 1924 when deputising at centre forward. However he lost his place over the close season and played only 12 more times over the following two seasons, finishing with the professional game in 1926 having made 70 appearances for The Blues.

His eldest brother was England international right back Bill Ashurst who was a Notts County stalwart who also played for Lincoln City and West Bromwich Albion.
