Description

Burton on Trent, Staffordshire born centre forward Ben Appleby joined Second Division Burton Swifts from Southern League club Chatham in July 1900, whom he had joined in 1899 having previously played for Shobnall Albion in 1894, Trinity Strollers in 1895, Beeston Rovers in 1896 and Burton Wanderers in 1898, and he made his Football League debut against Chesterfield Town in September 1900. He scored 5 goals in 36 games in 1900-01 before joining West Bromwich Albion in May 1901.

However he only played once for The Baggies in a 1-0 home defeat to Glossop in the first match of the new season and he joined Southern League Bristol Rovers in 1903, where he converted to centre half, winning the Southern League Championship with The Pirates in 1905. After six years at Eastville, having scored 9 goals in 180 appearances, he joined non league Leighton in 1909.
