Description

Equally at home in the right or left half position, Forest Hill, London born Alf Amos began his football career playing for Old Kingstonians, joining Southern League Brentford in the summer of 1913. He made his debut at the start of the 1914-15 season and played 26 games before the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War, and played Army football while serving during the conflict with The Middlesex Regiment. After the War he returned to Brentford in 1919, and when they joined the new Third Division in the summer of 1920, he made his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture at Exeter City that August. He was a regular in Brentford’s first two League seasons, scoring 5 goals in 138 appearances for The Bees in all competitions, before joining Millwall in May 1922, immediately becoming a key player for The Lions.

He played in nine of the 11 matches in 1926 when Millwall created a Football League record for the most consecutive matches without conceding a goal, and was a member of the great FA Cup giant killing team of 1927 who knocked out triple League Champions, Huddersfield Town in the third round. He was an ever present during 1927-28 as Millwall won the Third Division (South) Championship, although he lost his place in the team in the Second Division and played only ten more games in his final two seasons at the club. He eventually left Millwall in the 1930 close season after 15 goals (of which 11 were penalties) in 232 appearances to become player-coach of non league Hitchin Town, and had a successful spell as the club’s manager between 1930 and 1937. He is a member of the Millwall Hall of Fame.
