Preston born goalkeeper Harry Abbott made his breakthrough in League football with Nelson, having joined them from Portsmouth in 1923 (after failing to make the first team there) and made his Football League debut against Walsall that April. He made 161 appearances from 1922 to 1927 before moving to Luton Town. He stayed two years at Luton playing 63 times for the club before moving to Exeter City in 1929, where he failed to make the first team. Returning to Lancashire, he played 33 games for Rochdale in 1931-32 before signing for newly formed non league Wigan Athletic, after Wigan Borough, it’s predecessor, had resigned from the League the previous season.
