Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire born inside left Joe Allen began his football career with Bilsthorpe Colliery in 1928 and first played for Mansfield Town in 1929 when they were still a Midland League club, rejoining Bilsthorpe Colliery in 1930. He spent the 1932-33 season on the books of Second Division Tottenham Hotspur and played for their nursery club Northfleet in 1932 before making his Football League debut for Spurs against Bradford City in April 1933, scoring in a 1-1 draw, a match which proved his only appearance for The Lilywhites.
Allen joined Queen’s Park Rangers that summer and spent two seasons at Loftus Road, scoring 7 goals in 58 appearances before a return to Mansfield Town in the 1935 close season, He scored the only goal in a win over Oldham on his League debut for Mansfield that August and scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Darlington the next month, but in October he left Field Mill after 5 goals in 8 appearances to join the exodus to the French League, where he played for Racing Club de Roubaix and Nancy before retiring from professional football.
