Description

Burslem born wing half Arthur McGarry had played for Goldenhill St John’s prior to The First World War but after the conflict he joined Second Division hometown club Port Vale in October 1919, making his Football League debut that month at South Shields and soon establishing himself as a first team regular. However he lost his place in September 1920 playing only three Vale matches during 1920-21 before moving to Reading the following summer after 35 appearances. At Elm Park he played 2 seasons making 63 appearances, before joining Rochdale in the summer of 1923. He scored his only career goal in March 1924 in a 4-2 victory over Grimsby Town at Spotland, but lost his place the following season making only 3 appearances during 1925, which would be the last of 44 appearances in total for Dale. He had a spell at Hartlepools United without making their first team before joining Welsh League Barry Town in 1926, subsequently playing for Goldenhill Wanderers.
