Description

Rotherham, Yorkshire born left back Jack Jones began his football career with Allerton Bywater Colliery in 1910 and played for Industry FC in 1911, Bird-in-Hand in 1912, and Maltby Main Colliery Welfare in 1913 from where he joined Sunderland in November , spending the rest 1914-15 on their books before the intervention of the First World War, without having made a first team appearance.

After the War, despite still not having made his first team debut for The Wearsiders, he was transferred to Second Division Birmingham for a fee of £2,000 in May 1920. He made his Football League debut against Hull City in August 1920 and missed only 5 games that season as Birmingham won the Second Division Championship, forming a formidable full back partnership with Frank Womack in the First Division.

He played another six seasons with The Blues, and was a virtual ever present in 1922-23, 1924-25 and 1925-26, a season in which he scored his only goal for Birmingham, a penalty in a 2-1 win over Manchester United in April 1926, but he lost his regular place in their starting line up in October 1926 and played only six more matches before he joined Nelson in July 1927 after 237 appearances for The Blues.

His spell at Nelson was brief and he signed for Crewe Alexandra in March 1928 after only 13 appearances for The Admirals. He played two more seasons at Crewe scoring 7 goals in 92 appearances before joining Midland league Scarborough in 1930, retiring from football in 1931.
