Description

Swanton Morley, Norfolk born inside left Arthur Hawes started his football career at CEYMS (Norwich) in 1913 and played for Boulton & Paul in 1914 before joining local Southern League club Norwich City in 1915. After the First World War’s resolution he resumed with Norwich in 1919, but moved to the North East to join Second Division South Shields in May 1920, making his Football League debut against Birmingham City that August, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory. After 19 goals in 53 matches, 18 of which came in his debut season when he was Shields’ leading goalscorer, Sunderland moved in to sign him in December 1921 and he made his Sunderland debut the same month, scoring twice against West Bromwich Albion in a 5-0 victory at Roker Park.

Described as “a dashing young player… [who] shoots with tremendous accuracy and power and is noted for his first-time efforts from all angles”, he scored 12 goals as Sunderland finished runners up in the League Championship in 1922-23 and played six seasons at Sunderland, scoring 39 goals in 147 appearances, but he lost his place from the start of 1925-26 and was a fringe player in their side for his last two seasons on Wearside, before signing for Bradford Park Avenue in August 1927. He won the Third Division (North) Championship in his first season at Park Avenue and scored 18 goals in 54 matches over his two seasons there before joining Accrington Stanley in July 1929.

Single season spells at Accrington where he scored 9 goals in 41 appearances, and at Nelson, whom he joined in July 1930 scoring 4 goals in 29 matches during what proved to be their final League season, followed before he joined Rochdale for a brief spell in May 1931, without making a first team appearance. He soon went to non league Hyde United and also played for Wombwell in 1931, returning to Rochdale in February 1932 for the final 13 matches of his League career. He then joined Goole Town in the summer of 1932 and finished his playing career joining Frost’s Athletic a year later, his last known club before his eventual retirement.

NB The photograph was taken on 25th August 1923 at the home match with West Ham United, which ended 0-0.
