Description

Chatterley, near Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire born outside right George Rushton began his football career with Leek Broughs and joined local Second Division club Burslem Port Vale in June 1901, making his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion that September. Rushton scored 6 goals in 23 appearances during a single season stay at Cobridge Athletic Ground before leaving Vale for Barrow in the 1902 close, soon returning to Vale in January 1903 where he scored in both of his subsequent first team appearances that April. He moved to Southern League club Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 1903 before a return to Football League action when he joined newly elected Second Division club Hull City in August 1905.

He played in The Tigers’ inaugural League match in a win over Barnsley that September and scored 15 goals in 36 appearances for Hull City over two seasons at Anlaby Road, but in the summer of 1907 he returned to Southern League action joining Swindon Town, where he was a regular during their 1907-08 and 1908-09 campaigns, scoring 13 goals in 51 appearances. But he briefly left The Robins to join Brentford, where he scored twice in 16 appearances during 1909-10 before returning to The County Ground later the same season, although he was no longer a regular in the side and scored twice in only 6 appearances during their 1910-11 Southern League Championship triumph.

Mainly on the fringes during his second spell with Swindon, Rushton made 13 more appearances for Swindon Town before joining Midland League club Goole Town in 1911, before finishing his career with spells at Heckmondwike and Hull Tivoli in 1912 before his eventual retirement.

NB in the photograph he sits next to The Dubonnet Cup, won by Swindon Town in Paris in May 1910 in an invitational match in which they beat FA Cup runners up Barnsley with two goals from Harold Fleming, although it is uncertain whether Rushton played in the match.
