Barnsley, Yorkshire born centre half Billy Banner began his football career with Poolsbrook United in 1898, playing for Dronfield Town in 1899 and New Whittington Exchange in 1900. In the 1901 close season he joined Second Division Chesterfield Town, making his Football League debut against Doncaster Rovers that September, missing only 3 more matches over the remainder of his debut season. He scored 4 goals in 53 appearances over two seasons before joining Southern League Queen’s Park Rangers in the summer of 1903.
After a season at Loftus Road he returned to Chesterfield and spent a further four seasons as a near ever present at Saltergate, scoring 9 goals in 140 appearances before joining non league Hardwick Colliery in the 1908 close season. He subsequently played for Denaby United in 1909 and returned to play for Hardwick Colliery in 1910 before his eventual retirement.
