Description

Bedminster, Bristol born goalkeeper Ted Davis began his senior football career on the books of Bristol City but didn’t make The Robins’ first team before joining Second Division club Clapton Orient in 1912, where he made his debut in an FA Cup tie at Sunderland in January 1913. He made his Football League debut the following week in a win over Hull City but lost the gloves after three straight defeats, leaving Millfields Road to join Southern League Portsmouth in the 1913 close season. He was then signed by Second Division club Huddersfield Town in February 1914, where he settled in as understudy to Alex Mutch both sides of the First World War,

After the resumption of peacetime football in 1919 he played 6 matches during Huddersfield’s promotion season as they finished Second Division runners up, and only once the following season, before taking over the gloves from Mutch in October 1921. However despite playing in the first four rounds of their FA Cup run which ended in their 1922 FA Cup Final victory over Preston North End, and 34 matches in total over the campaign, Mutch was preferred during the latter stages of the season including the FA Cup semi final and Final.

Davis joined Blackburn Rovers in the 1922 close season after 57 appearances for The Terriers and shared goalkeeping responsibilities with Ronnie Sewell during 1922-23 making 23 appearances before Sewell re-established his position as the Rovers’ undisputed glovesman the next season, and Davis played just twice over the next two seasons before re-joining hometown club Bristol City in 1925, for whom he made 3 appearances in September 1925 as understudy to Billy Coggins and Frank Vallis. He joined non league Bath City in 1927, his final club before his eventual retirement.
