Description

North Staveley, Yorkshire born left back John “Tony” Arrowsmith began his football career with Anston United in 1907 and played for Holbrook Senior League club Anson Colliery in 1908, where he was originally a centre forward, before joining Midland League club Worksop Town in 1909 where he converted to full back. He signed for Second Division Grimsby Town in May 1910, making his Football League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1911, missing only one match in his breakthrough season and two in each of 1912-13 and 1913-14.

He remained a regular in 1914-15, the final season before the onset of the First World War forced the abandonment of peacetime football in the summer of 1915 by when he had made 141 appearances for Grimsby Town, and although he played for Chesterfield during the War, he didn’t resume his career once peacetime football returned in its aftermath.
