Description

Parkhead, Glasgow born right back George Smith was playing for Parkhead Juniors when he was signed by First Division Chelsea in the summer of 1921, making his Football League debut at Blackburn Rovers that August and immediately establishing himself as a regular in the first eleven. He was an ever present in 1922-23, and although they were relegated to the Second Division in 1923-24, he continued to be a stalwart of the club, again being ever present in 1926-27. They twice finished third, and once fourth and fifth, before eventually they won promotion back to the First Division in 1929-30 as Second Division runners up.
However Smith lost his regular place in September 1930 and only made 12 more appearances for Chelsea back in the top flight, his final game coming at Sheffield Wednesday in September 1931. After 370 appearances for The Pensioners he joined Scottish League Second Division club East Fife in 1932 where he finished his career.
NB the Chelsea players, photographed in training. are (l-r) Bobby McNeil. George Smith, David Cameron and Tommy Meehan.
