Lye, Worcestershire born winger Joe Scott began his football career with Cradley Heath in 1922 before joining Third Division (North) Rotherham County in the 1923 close season, making his debut in an FA Cup tie at Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in December 1923. He soon became a regular in the Rotherham first team, and in 1927-28 he had scored 21 goals when he was signed by Barnsley in March 1928 after 58 goals in 180 appearances.

However he didn’t settle at Oakwell and after 3 goals in 10 appearances he joined Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 1928. He was mainly a fringe player at White Hart Lane, scoring 4 goals in 18 appearances over the next three seasons before re-joining non league Cradley Heath in 1931.
