Newport born left back Jimmy Griffin began his football career with Oak Villa in 1918 before joining hometown Southern League club Newport County in the 1919 close season. A regular in his first season at Somerton Park, when he played 42 League and Cup matches, he was a regular member of County’s team in their inaugural Football League season after they joined the Third Division (South) at the start of the 1920-21. In their first three League seasons he made a further 85 appearances for The Ironsides before joining Second Division Stockport County in May 1923. However he played only twice for The Hatters at the start of the 1923-24 season before losing his place, returning to Wales to join Ebbw Vale in 1924, where he was a member of their 1926 Welsh Cup Final side that beat Swansea Town, the only time in the club’s history that they have won the Welsh Cup.
