Tottenham born right back Wally Barnard began his football career after the First World War with Isthmian League Clapton, and spent 1922-23 on the books of Tottenham Hotspur, without making a first team appearance for his local club. He joined Third Division (South) Gillingham in July 1923, making his Football League debut in a win against Norwich City on Christmas Day the same year, playing twice more over the next four days. He never again played for the Gillingham first team but stayed at the club until joining Brentford in June 1926, however he failed to make their first eleven and left the professional game in 1927.
