Description

Paisley, Renfrewshire born wing half Archie Young began his football career with Clydebank Juniors, from where he joined First Division Portsmouth in December 1934, making his Football League debut against Middlesbrough in September 1937 in a 2-0 home defeat. He also played 4 days later in a match at Leeds United where Portsmouth suffered a 3-1 defeat, however these were the extent of his first team opportunities at Fratton Park and after the season end he joined Third Division (South) Notts County in June 1938.

After playing in the first two fixtures of the 1938-39 season before losing his place, he wasn’t called upon until mid February but played in three straight wins and then a further six winless fixtures before the end of April as Notts County finished the season in 11th place. His 11 appearances were the extent of his first team opportunities, whether he was released in the summer of 1939 or whether the outbreak of the Second World War simply brought his playing career to a close (as it did for so many), he didn’t feature again in senior football.
