He was one of three players, Jimmy McKinnell and Willie McCall the other two, sold by Queens to First Division Blackburn Rovers in February 1921 in order to help fund the purchase of Palmerston Park. He made his Football League debut the same month against Sheffield United and soon settled in as the regular in the left back berth for Blackburn, and missed very few games over the next four seasons, including being an ever present in 1923-24.

He was part of the Blackburn FA Cup semi final team of 1925 that lost to Cardiff City at Meadow Lane, Nottingham, but from the start of the new season he lost his place and played only once during 1925-26 before joining non league Darwen in the summer of 1926 after 191 appearances for Rovers. He returned to Football League action in December 1926 when he joined Swindon Town. He remained with Swindon for the rest of the 1920’s, making 89 appearances in three and a half seasons with The Robins before returning to Scotland to join Beith in 1930. He subsequently finished his career with Irvine Meadow whom he joined in 1931.
