Description

Darvel, Ayrshire born half back and later right back John Woodburn began his football career with Hurlford prior to the First World War, but after the War he signed for newly elected Second Division club West Ham United in July 1919, making his Football League debut at Birmingham that October at right half. When George Kay was injured in March 1920, Woodburn deputised for him at centre half, playing in 3 matches before losing his place, but after a brief spell with non league club Peterborough & Fletton United, Woodburn headed back to Scottish football, initially with Vale of Clyde and then with Scottish League club Ayr United, signing for them in May 1920. Woodburn played 128 matches for Ayr United through to 1928 playing mainly at right back, and during his time with The Honest Men he also had a brief loan spell with Galston in 1924-25, making a single appearance.
