Wednesbury, Staffordshire born inside left Tommy Wood began his football career with Wednesbury United in 1924 and joined Birmingham League Shrewsbury Town in 1925. From there he was signed by First Division Aston Villa, making his Football League debut against Blackburn Rovers in November 1930, his only appearance of the season. Mainly a fringe player at Aston Villa, he made 20 appearances in 1933-34, 6 of which were in FA Cup ties, and he was a member of Aston Villa’s 1934 FA Cup semi final team that lost to Manchester City at Leeds Road, Huddersfield. He also managed 22 appearances in Aston Villa’s 1935-36 relegation season, but in seven seasons at Villa Park scored just twice in 71 appearances.

Third Division (South) Newport County signed him in November 1936 and he was a regular at Somerton Park for the final three seasons before the Second World War, and also a more regular goalscorer. Described while at Newport as “a clever, constructive forward and possessor of a powerful shot”, he only missed one game as County won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1938-39, however the Second World War cut short his career after just three Second Division matches in September 1939, and he retired during the War having scored 31 goals in 117 appearances for Newport.
