Description

Dalmuir, Dunbartonshire born centre half Tom Williamson began his football career playing junior football for Kilbowie Ross Dhu in 1919 and Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in 1920 from where two years later he signed for First Division Blackburn Rovers, making his Football League debut at Burnley in October 1922. After 4 games in his debut season, he scored his only goal for Rovers in a 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion in September 1923, one of 15 further appearances he made in 1923-24 before returning to Scotland to joinThird Lanark in the summer of 1924, where over the next two seasons he scored twice in 85 matches.

In 1926 he returned to Football League action, joining Third Division (North) Stoke City and Williamson proved to be a shrewd signing by Tom Mather as he displayed his quality, helping them to win the Third Division (North) Championship at the end of the season for an immediate return to the Second Division. He was almost and ever present in 1927-28 missing just two matches as Stoke had a good return to the second tier finishing fifth. For the next two seasons Williamson forged a fine half back partnership with both Len Armitage and Harry Sellars and this trio were a vital part of Stoke’s midfield towards the end of the 1920’s. However he lost his place in January 1931 and in the summer he left the Victoria Ground to join Norwich City after 15 goals in 162 appearances for The Potters.

He was a near ever present for two seasons at The Nest, but made just one appearance in their Third Division (South) Championship winning season of 1933-34 and joined non league Frost’s Athletic in 1934 after 4 goals in 85 appearances for The Canaries before his eventual retirement.
