Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire born left back Fred Wilkes began his senior football career with Southern League club Reading, where he made his first team debut in 1907 and became a first team regular in their 1908-09 line up.
In the spring of 1909 he joined Second Division Tottenham Hotspur and made his Football League debut against Gainsborough Trinity on 27th March 1909, playing 6 times on the run in as Tottenham were promoted to the First Division as Second Division runners up. He made 23 appearances in Tottenham’s first season in the top flight and 22 more in 1910-11 but lost his place in October 1911, playing only once more for Spurs against Sheffield United in April 1912 before leaving the club after 60 appearances for Spurs, his last known club.
