Auchterderran, Fife born winger Campbell Whyte began his football career with Inverkeithing in 1923 and played for Denbeath Star in 1924 and Lochgelly Celtic in 1925 before joining Scottish League Third Lanark in 1926. He spent 1927-28 at Cowdenbeath before returning to Third Lanark for a further season, heading to England to join Third Division (South) Gillingham in July 1929, making his Football League debut that September against Exeter City, scoring 3 times in 24 appearances for Gillingham during 1929-30.

He joined Northampton Town in May 1930 but struggled to get into their first eleven, scoring once in only five appearances, before being freed at the end of the season. He joined Rochdale in the summer of 1931 but never played for their first team, before leaving the professional game.
