Lytham, Lancashire born wing half Ernie Whiteside started his football career at local junior clubs Lytham St John’s in 1904, Lytham Institute in 1905 and Kirkham in 1906 before joining Second Division Bolton Wanderers, for whom he made his Football League debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1908, his only appearance that season. He only managed 7 appearances in 1909-10 as Bolton were relegated from the First Division but broke into the first team as a regular in September 1910 making 30 appearances as Bolton regained their top flight status, finishing as Second Division runners up.

He stayed at Burnden Park for three more seasons before joining Midland League York City in 1914 after 88 appearances for The Trotters, and after the First World War he had a brief spell in Irish League football with Shelbourne, before returning to England to join Fleetwood. In 1920 he joined Halifax Town, and in September 1921 he returned to Football League action with Rochdale, playing 3 times for them in their inaugural League season that autumn before his retirement.
