Newark, Nottinghamshire born left half Arthur Weightman began his football career with hometown Midland League club Newark Town from where he was signed by Third Division (South) club Torquay United in 1930, his Football League debut following against Notts County the same November. After 4 appearances for The Gulls he returned to the East Midlands signing for Mansfield Town in the 1931 close season, ahead of their inaugural Football League season and he established himself at left half in The Stags’ line up from mid September.
Weightman scored his only career League goal for Mansfield in a 4-3 win over Clapton Orient in January 1932 and made 29 appearances during his debut season at Field Mill, but after 18 further appearances before Christmas he lost his place and returned to Newark Town in 1933, subsequently joining Southern League club Tunbridge Wells Rangers in 1934, his last recorded club.
NB the photograph was taken before the FA Cup tie between Walsall and Mansfield Town at Fellows Park on 26th November 1932. Walsall won the match 4-1. In the image Weightman stands behind outside left George Bowater.
