Chester-le-Street, County Durham born wing half Norman Watson began his football career with Hylton Colliery in 1919 and played for Southwick in 1920 and Chester-le-Street in 1921 before joining Second Division Leicester City in 1922, making his Football League debut against Manchester United in April 1923, one of two appearances he made before the end of the season. Initially a fringe player, he made 11 appearances during the 1924-25 campaign that saw Leicester win the Second Division Championship.

In the First Division, Watson was a regular member of Leicester’s team for two seasons from August 1925, but he lost his place in November 1927 as Leicester finished third in the League Championship. He played 18 times during their 1928-29 campaign that saw Leicester finish runners up in the League Championship, their highest League finish until they won the title in 2016. He remained at Leicester for a further three seasons before joining Notts County in 1932 after a single goal (in a heavy defeat at Grimsby Town in November 1930) in 178 appearances.

He only made 5 appearances for Notts County in 1932-33 before joining non league Workington in 1933, moving to Wigan Athletic in 1934 and on to Horwich RMI in 1935. He finished his career at Wigan Athletic having re-joined them in 1936.
