He made his Football League debut against Middlesbrough in August 1933 but played mainly in the reserves making only 13 first team appearances before transferring to Southend United in June 1935. He then made 114 appearances for Southend before leaving for West Ham United in February 1938.

However he only made 11 league appearances for The Hammers before joining Hartlepool United at the beginning of the 1939-40 season, playing the first 3 matches of that season before the Second World War intervened and the season was abandoned. After the war, he moved back to Ireland to manage Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.

Turner was capped 10 times for the Republic of Ireland at senior level between 1936 and 1939.
