Salford, Lancashire born outside left Percy Tompkin played junior football in the East Midlands for Countesthorpe United in 1910, Leicester Imperial in 1911, Sutton Junction in 1912, Hinckley United in 1913 and Nuneaton Town in 1914 before the First World War, and after the War he joined Second Division club Huddersfield Town making his Football League debut, but only appearance for The Terriers, at Stockport County in March 1920 as Huddersfield closed in on promotion to the First Division.

He joined Second Division Leicester City in the close season of 1920, scoring on his debut in a win over Bury that September and he was a regular for The Foxes in their 1923-24 campaign as they finished third in the division, narrowly missing out on promotion. He scored 4 times in 90 appearances over four seasons at Filbert Street before re-joining non league Nuneaton Town in 1925, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
