Derby born right back Bill Thompson was an England schoolboy international in 1914 when he played in a match against Wales before the First World War, and after the War he began his football career with Rolls Royce, joining First Division Nottingham Forest in August 1920 and he made his Football League debut against Sunderland that August. Although Nottingham Forest were relegated in 1925, Thompson stayed with the club, his career spanning a further ten seasons until his final Forest appearance against Manchester United in April 1935, after which he eventually joined non league Burton Town in 1935. In total he scored 5 times, all penalties, in 390 appearances for Forest, his only senior club.
