Newcastle born winger Andy Thompson played for Whickham Park Villa in 1919 before joining First Division Tottenham Hotspur in 1920 making his Football League debut at Sunderland in March 1921. He made 3 appearances in his debut season and scored his first goals for Spurs the following season scoring against Bolton Wanderers and twice against Cardiff City in the first two home fixtures of the season. He made 18 appearances in 1921-22 but returned to the fringe for 2 seasons before breaking into the first team in January 1925, after which he was a regular inclusion in the starting line up until the beginning of Tottenham’s relegation season of 1927-28, when he only made 4 appearances.

He joined Chester in the summer of 1931 after 21 goals in 165 appearances for The Lilywhites, but only stayed a few months at Sealand Road scoring twice in 7 appearances before joining Norwich City in November 1931. He scored on his debut in an FA Cup tie victory against Wimbledon at the end of the month. By the end of the season he had scored 3 goals in 14 appearances for The Canaries before he moved back to London in the close season of 1932 joining former Tottenham colleague Jimmy Seed’s Clapton Orient. He scored 5 goals in 19 appearances in his single season at Lea Bridge before joining non league Ashford Town in 1933, playing for Northfleet in 1934 before his retirement from the game.
