Description

Gateshead born goalkeeper Hal Tate began his football career with Marley Hill in 1922 before joining First Division Newcastle United in August 1923, for whom he made his Football League debut against West Ham United in September 1924, making four appearances for The Magpies as understudy to Bill Bradley. He made no further first team appearances and in May 1927 joined West Ham United as understudy to Ted Hufton, making 14 appearances over the following two seasons before joining Third Division (North) Doncaster Rovers in July 1929,

He missed very few matches during his first season at Belle Vue but lost his place in October 1930 and despite several good runs in the first eleven he was never assured of the gloves, making his final appearance of 135 for Rovers in April 1935 before retiring from playing.

NB in the photograph he is on the left with West Ham team mates Tommy Yews (centre) and Jimmy Loughlin (right).
