Description

Cannock, Staffordshire born centre half Alec Talbot began his football career with Hednesford Primitives in 1918 and Hednesford Town in 1919 before joining First Division Aston Villa in April 1923, making his Aston Villa debut in an FA Cup tie at Swansea Town in April 1924 during Aston Villa’s FA Cup run that saw them reach the Final at Wembley, where they lost to Newcastle United. However Talbot played no further part in the campaign and his Football League debut didn’t come until the following season when he played at Bury in September 1924.

On the fringes of the first team over the next four seasons, he broke into Aston Villa’s first eleven on a regular basis in November 1928, and he was an ever present for the 1930-31 and 1931-32 seasons. In November 1932 he represented The Football League as they were beaten 3-0 by The Scottish League at Maine Road, Manchester. Twice a losing FA Cup semi finalist with Aston Villa in 1929 and 1934, when they lost to Portsmouth and Manchester City respectively, he was also a runner up in the League Championship on two occasions. In all he made 263 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring 7 goals for the club. In June 1935 he joined Second Division Bradford Park Avenue where he scored once in 6 appearances, before joining Brierley Hill Alliance in 1938 and Stourbridge in 1939, the Second World War then forcing his playing retirement.

NB in the photograph he is shown with Aston Villa team mates Teddy Bowen, Jimmy Gibson and Billy Walker.
