Grimsby born winger Jack Swain began his senior football career with hometown club Grimsby Town and made his Football League debut in a First Division match at Sheffield Wednesday in November 1936, scoring on his home debut against West Bromwich Albion in a 3-2 home defeat the following February. He found opportunities limited at Blundell Park and scored 6 goals in 23 appearances over 3 seasons until he joined Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in the summer of 1939. His football career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War soon thereafter.
