Description

Brechin, Angus born inside left Charlie Sutherland began his football career with junior club Petershill in 1915 before moving to Scottish League club Third Lanark in 1916. He had a loan spell at Abercorn the same year before he joined Clydebank in 1917, moving to St Mirren in August 1918. He played in St Mirren’s Victory Cup Final win in 1919, scoring twice in the Final in a 3-0 win over Heart of Midlothian at Celtic Park in April 1919 in front of 60,000 spectators, and he scored 9 goals in 66 appearances for The Buddies before he joined newly elected Third Division (South) club Millwall in May 1920. Sutherland played in their inaugural Football League fixture against Bristol Rovers in August 1920, and scored 8 goals in 58 games for The Lions over the next two seasons before a move to Bristol City in the summer of 1922.

In his first season with The Robina he scored 9 times as City won the Third Division (South) Championship and promotion to the Second Division, although they were relegated the following season, and over four seasons at Ashton Gate he scored 23 goals in 107 appearances before joining Merthyr Town in the 1926 close season, spending a single season in mid Wales scoring 6 times in 34 appearances. He then re-joined St Mirren in June 1927 where he scored a further 5 goals in 10 matches before being released in November 1927, thus finished his professional football career and any further clubs he played for thereafter are uncertain.
