Description
Newark, Nottinghamshire born outside left Jimmy Stoakes played for Newark Athletic in 1914 prior to the First World War, but after the War he signed for First Division club Notts County in 1919, making his Football League debut against Chelsea in March 1920, one of a pair of appearances he made for The Magpies as they slid towards relegation.
After a further season in which he didn’t appear in the Notts first team, Stoakes was released and joined Third Division (South) club Norwich City in the 1921 close season, where he became a regular performer on the left wing, being ever present in their 1922-23 campaign, missing only 5 matches the following season. However he lost his place in March 1925 and made only a dozen further appearances for Norwich through to the year end. After 7 goals in 150 appearances for Norwich City he joined non league club Newark Town in 1926, and later played for Ransome & Marles in 1927 before his eventual retirement.
