Full back Frank Spencer played for Southern League Brighton & Hove Albion both sides of the First World War, during which he served with the 17th Middlesex Regiment Footballers’ Battalion, volunteering for service in December 1914, and he was among more than a dozen Brighton players to do so, with 5 of them killed in action. He retired from professional football just as Brighton joined The Football League in 1920, without representing them thereafter.

NB In the photograph, playing for Brighton before an FA Cup tie in January 1914, he is in the right centre of the immediate foreground behind captain Joe Leeming and William Miller, with Bert Longstaff to his left.
