Description
Rotherham, Yorkshire born right back Redvers “Reg” Smith began his senior career after the First World War with Midland League club Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, from where he came to the attention of Third Division (South) Brighton & Hove Albion, signing for them in 1923 and making his Football League debut that November against Swansea Town. He made a dozen appearances during his debut season and during his seven seasons at The Goldstone Ground he never made less than that, however he only exceeded 25 appearances in three of those seasons, almost certainly mainly due to injury. In that time Brighton finished 5th in the League three times and fourth twice. By the time Smith joined non league Shoreham in 1930 he had scored once in 150 appearances for The Seagulls, his only goal coming against Plymouth Argyle in a 4-1 success in November 1927.
